Board Member Spotlight: Jim Shook

Jim Shook has spent more than four decades building, managing, and investing in real estate, with a career rooted in strategy, stewardship, and community impact.
A graduate of Indiana University, Jim began his real estate career in 1982 with institutional experience at Rubloff, Inc. in Chicago. He later returned to Indiana to join his family’s business, The Shook Agency, Inc., where he served as a commercial partner. In 2001, he founded Shook Realty Group, LLC in Indianapolis, a commercial brokerage, management, and investment company that reflects his entrepreneurial leadership and long-term vision.
Throughout his career, Jim has brokered a wide range of commercial property types. He has developed retail centers and office buildings, assembled large land tracts for clients, managed significant commercial portfolios, and raised equity and institutional-grade financing for major projects. His experience spans brokerage, development, asset management, and capital markets, giving him a comprehensive understanding of how real estate decisions influence economic growth and community stability.
Service has always been central to Jim’s professional life. He has served as investment chair for three foundations, held board positions with multiple banks, and helped form the Indiana Business Bank, where he served as Chairman. In addition, he has supported numerous nonprofit and cultural organizations throughout Central Indiana. His leadership reflects a consistent commitment to responsible governance and community engagement.
Jim brings this depth of experience to the Sleeping Bear Gateways Council. His background in land development, finance, and long-term asset stewardship provides valuable perspective as SBGC works to balance thoughtful land use with attainable housing solutions that preserve the character and vitality of our gateway communities.
