It Takes All of Us: A New Partnership for Attainable Housing
At Sleeping Bear Gateway Council (SBGC), we’ve always believed that solving the attainable housing challenge in Leelanau County is bigger than any one organization. Our last blog was titled “It Takes All of Us”—because that’s exactly what this effort requires: neighbors, local businesses, civic leaders, and nonprofits working side by side.
Today, we’re proud to share an important step forward. SBGC has partnered with Habitat for Humanity Grand Traverse Region, led by CEO Wendy Irvin, to jointly advance attainable housing solutions in our community.
This partnership allows us to:
- Share knowledge so we can move projects forward faster.
- Connect with more families and essential workers who need stable housing close to where they work.
- Listen, learn, and coordinate so that our collective impact is greater than the sum of our parts.
Habitat for Humanity brings decades of experience in building and sustaining affordable housing, including innovative projects that balance quality, sustainability, and cost-efficiency. SBGC adds a deep focus on land acquisition, community land trust development, and rallying local support to keep homes attainable for generations to come.
Together, we are stronger, more effective, and more efficient. Most importantly, we are more hopeful—because this collaboration shows what’s possible when organizations with complementary strengths come together to meet urgent community needs.
Today, we want to celebrate this new partnership, highlighting Habitat’s accomplishments and achievements, and shining a light on Wendy Irvin’s commitment to innovative housing solutions in our region.
Habitat for Humanity – Grand Traverse Region: Building Hope in Northern MI

In the face of escalating challenges in housing affordability and sustainability, Habitat for Humanity Grand Traverse Region has emerged as a leader of both innovation and compassion. The organization is at the forefront of removing barriers to affordable, sustainable housing, always keeping the future homeowner at the center. Serving low- to moderate-income households, Habitat Grand Traverse provides not just homes, but also dignity and stability through thoughtful housing solutions and strong community partnerships.
Three years into Habitat’s ambitious goals to build 47 homes across Grand Traverse, Leelanau, and Kalkaska counties within 5–7 years, Habitat Grand Traverse is setting a benchmark for affordable housing initiatives in Michigan.
Their record of success is backed by groundbreaking approaches, including the adoption of precast concrete wall systems and the award-winning Net Zero Depot Neighborhood in Traverse City. Habitat’s current New Waves Neighborhood in Leelanau County continues this commitment, balancing immediate local needs with long-term sustainability.
At the heart of this success is Wendy Irvin, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Grand Traverse Region, and recipient of the 2025 Cunningham-Limp Community Builder of the Year award. Since assuming leadership in 2012, Wendy has helped more than 40 families achieve homeownership in the region. Her vision for strategic, people-focused development has positioned Habitat Grand Traverse as a regional leader in creating generational stability and economic resilience.
“The impact of affordable housing represents more than shelter,” said Irvin. “Housing correlates to better health and education and is a reflection of the commitment from community volunteers and donors.”
Under Wendy’s leadership, Habitat exemplifies the transformative power of innovation and collaboration in tackling complex housing challenges. By embracing forward-thinking design and strategic partnerships, they are not only building houses—they are cultivating thriving, resilient communities.
The Sleeping Bear Gateway Council is honored to work alongside Wendy and Habitat for Humanity – Grand Traverse Region in developing creative housing solutions. Together, we are striving to address the urgent housing crisis faced by moderate-income families, ensuring that our essential workers and future generations can live and thrive here in Northern Michigan.
