The Sleeping Bear Gateways Council has raised over $600,000 to support affordable housing for local essential workers in Leelanau County.

The Sleeping Bear Gateways Council is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the character of communities surrounding the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which attracts more than 1.5 million visitors annually.

The money will help fund year-round housing projects for people who keep the community running — including teachers, health care staff and service workers. Council leaders say the goal is to ensure those workers can continue living where they work.
